SLAD Youth Activist Scholarship
2024 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The South Lyon Area Democrats (SLAD) will be awarding a scholarship to a local graduating high school senior to support their college, vocational school, or other post-high-school education, training, or activism. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who demonstrates progressive values, care for their community, and a desire for action.
The scholarship will be a $2000 award and will be decided on by SLAD members.
Requirements
- A high school senior who is graduating in 2024.
- Must live in or go to school in the South Lyon Community Schools District (map: https://www.slcs.us/enrolling/boundary_maps/index.php).
- Must complete the required application materials listed below. Students will be considered based on their civic involvement and dedication to their community.
- Applications are due by April 30, 2024, no exceptions.

For this scholarship, applicants will be asked to submit the following:
- Contact information
- List of Activities or Personal Resume
- Email and Phone Number Contact for two Personal References
- Response to ONE of the following prompts. Your response can be written or creative in nature (video, visual, musical, etc.) to best showcase your talents and ideas.
- Describe an occasion when you had to organize other people to solve a problem. How could you use what you learned to fight social injustice in the future?
OR
- What do you consider the most pressing issue in your community? (Please define what you mean by “community”.)

The South Lyon Area Democrats (SLAD) recognizes the importance of privacy, and we are dedicated to protecting your privacy and handling any personal information you provide to us with care and respect. This Privacy Policy is designed to assist you in understanding how we collect, use, and share personal information you provide to us through this scholarship process. By submitting your application for our Youth Activist Scholarship, you confirm that you have read and consent to the information practices described in this policy.
Student Application Data
Your participation in the Youth Activist Scholarship program is voluntary and you may choose whether to participate. To be considered for a scholarship administered by SLAD, you may be required to submit data electronically so that we may review and consider your application in order to select award recipients.
Types of personally identifiable information may include, but are not limited to:
- full name
- address
- email address and phone numbers
- your parent(s) full name(s), address(es), email address(es) and phone number(s)
- current and future enrollment information
- involvement in work, school and community activities
- personal essay / video
- birthdate
- proof of residency or school attendance in the South Lyon Community School district
- personal references
SLAD will use your personal information only for the purpose for which it was collected. When you apply, your information will be automatically saved in our SLAD Google Documents Account for which we use a private setting allowing only SLAD Scholarship committee members to view or access this data. You will not be added to any email mailing lists or be contacted by SLAD for any other reason than this scholarship without your permission.
We may use your contact information to confirm receipt of your application, to gather more information if there are questions regarding your application, to send you notifications regarding your status, or for communication necessary to administer a program or provide a service. We will also share information, only as necessary with your parents / guardians. When you send email or other communications electronically, SLAD may retain those communications to process your inquiries, respond to your request or question and improve our services.
Finalists and Winner Notifications
No personal data will be shared with third parties without your explicit choice (opt in). If you become a finalist or a winner of the SLAD Youth Activist scholarship, we will reach out to you and your parents/guardians to obtain permission to notify your school counselor, and/or other school officials, to share the news. We will also issue a public press release to announce finalists and winner but will not share any contact information or contents of the submission without your consent.
